Background of the Study
In Nigeria’s corporate environment, effective communication is a cornerstone of business success. Pragmatic efficiency—the ability to convey meaning clearly and appropriately in context—is particularly critical in emails and meetings, where time constraints and formal expectations necessitate precision and clarity. Nigerian corporations, influenced by both indigenous cultural norms and global business practices, exhibit distinctive pragmatic strategies in their internal and external communications (Adewale, 2023). Emails often incorporate polite hedges, indirect requests, and culturally nuanced greetings, while meeting interactions demand succinctness and a balance between formality and collegiality. These pragmatic features not only streamline decision-making processes but also foster positive workplace relationships and operational efficiency. However, varying levels of pragmatic competence among employees may result in misunderstandings, misinterpretations, and even conflict (Onyema, 2024). This study examines the pragmatic efficiency of language used in corporate emails and meetings, focusing on how linguistic choices affect message clarity, persuasiveness, and overall communication effectiveness. It further investigates the influence of organizational culture on pragmatic practices, offering insights into how businesses can improve internal and external communication for better performance (Chima, 2025).
Statement of the Problem
Despite the significance of pragmatic efficiency in corporate settings, there is limited research on how Nigerian organizations manage this aspect in email and meeting communications. Variations in language use can lead to miscommunication, delays in decision-making, and reduced operational efficiency (Adewale, 2023). Inconsistent pragmatic practices may also affect professional relationships and corporate image, as unclear or culturally inappropriate messages can result in misunderstandings (Onyema, 2024). This study aims to address the gap by systematically analyzing the pragmatic strategies employed in Nigerian corporate communications. Without such analysis, organizations lack clear guidelines for optimizing communication, potentially hindering productivity and stakeholder engagement (Chima, 2025).
Objectives of the Study
To evaluate pragmatic strategies in corporate emails and meetings.
To determine the impact of these strategies on communication effectiveness.
To propose recommendations for enhancing pragmatic efficiency in business settings.
